“Giving grants to deserving organizations is something we look forward to each year,” said Chad Pennington, President. “Building stronger communities is what the 1^st and 10 Foundation and its supporters are all about. We are proud to be a part of the great things that they are doing in their communities.”

Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation has distributed $1,327,944 in funds to organizations in the Foundation’s geographical areas. 

Chad and Robin Pennington created the 1^st and 10 Foundation in 2003 with the mission to build stronger communities by funding programs and institutions that seek to improve quality of life throughout southern West Virginia and the Tri-State area and East Tennessee.

The following organizations have received grants in 2011:

Kanawha Charleston Soccer Foundation: Adding two additional soccer fields at the Friends of Coal Fields at Trace Fork Soccer Complex. Currently the complex can’t meet the demands of local programs and teams are unable to practice due to lack of facilities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State: Funding for four laptop computers to be used by agency staff while in the field at children’s homes, at schools and agency events. This will allow the agency to access the Agency Information Management System on the laptops while away from the office.

Citizens Conservation Corps of WV: Develop camping facilities, including 6 tent pads and 7 RV camp sites that will serve as home base form McDowell County 4-H, recreational hub for 22,000 local residents from McDowell County and southern West Virginia.

Mountaineer Food Bank: Funding for a mobile food pantry to distribute food to underserved, low-access communities in WV. This mobile pantry will serve Boone, McDowell and Wyoming counties.

Holzer Hospice: Funding for Camp Beaver – a bereavement camp to help children ages 6-15 deal with grief and loss of a loved one.

Vinson Little League: Funding to refurbish current Little League Fields and expand capacity to play and practice. Specifically, the addition of a new tee ball field and a track around the field for adults to exercise while children practice.

Children’s Place: Funding to furnish a room to meet the needs of children 1-2 years of age (new nap mats, pretend play toys, etc..)

Midland Trail Little League: Funding for safety equipment/uniforms and resurfacing of a ball field.

Cross Lanes Nitro Little League: Funding for new bleachers, portable pitching mounds and other items for the Cross Lanes/Nitro Little League facility. 

Pleasant Valley Home Health and Hospice Services: Funding to implement disease-specific management programs to improve quality of life for individuals as the disease progresses.

Passionate Volunteers: Funding for basketball, soccer and crafts camps for the poor children living in Wyoming County.

Chattanooga’s Kids on the Block: Funding for Healthy Snacking/Kids on the Move – a childhood obesity awareness program that provides 12 educational programs free of charge to elementary school children through the use of puppetry.

Catholic Charities of East Tennessee: Funding for a new van to transport boys ages 12-17 who are separated from their families due to domestic violence or juvenile justice issues. The vehicle would transport them to counseling, life skills classes, therapeutic visitation and other activities.

Crabtree Farms of Chattanooga: Funding for Summer Farm Camp – a one-week program at Emma Wheeler Homes neighborhood held twice each summer. The camp teaches gardening, self-sufficiency and healthy eating habits to at-risk children.

Morristown Hamblen Central Services: Funding for Holiday Cheer for Pre-Teens – a program that provides age-appropriate toys for financially needy 10-12 year olds for the Christmas season. The program works with Holiday Hope Fund which provides toys for children and food baskets for families during Christmas.

The Salvation Army Knoxville: Funding for the Joy Baker Center – an emergency shelter serving women with or without children who are victims of domestic violence and homeless women with children.

Camp Sycamore Creek: Funding to replace cracked asphalt surface with 4” concrete surface and to replace existing basketball goals that are rusting and becoming unsteady with safer and more modern goals.

Childhelp: Funding for the continuation for forensic interviewing to victims of abuse. The forensic interviewing is critical to getting convictions of predators, and minimizes the number of times a child

The Foundation reviews grants annually. The deadline for submitting a grant in 2012 is August 15. The 8th Annual Celebrity Bowl will be held on June 2 at the Strike Zone Bowling Center in Huntington, WV. Last year’s events raised over $185,000 for the Tri-State Community – a new record for the event! This unforgettable evening features dinner, silent auction and, of course, bowling! Each team is assigned a celebrity guest and bowls a game with that person. Last year’s Celebrity Bowl featured former Marshall University greats and NFL stars. 

Sponsors at the $5,000 level and above are invited to Friday night’s cocktail party, which includes dinner, silent auction and entertainment.
